ที่บริเวณศาลารูปนายเรืองของวัดอรุณราชวรารามนั้น มีรูปสลักหินโบราณของนายเรืองผู้เผาตนเองที่เป็นตำนานเล่าขานกันในอดีต นายเรืองผู้นี้เป็นผู้บูชาไฟต่างประทีปด้วยความปรารถนาที่ต้องการไปสู่พุทธภูมิ ศาลารูปนายเรืองของวัดอรุณราชวราราม

นายเรืองกับสหาย ๒ คน คือ ขุนศรีกัณฐัศว์กรมม้า และนายทองรักต่างปรารถนาพุทธภูมิ พากันไปเสี่ยงดอกบัวอ่อน ณ พระอุโบสถวัดครุฑ ว่าถ้าใครจะสำเร็จแก่พระโพธิญาณแล้ว ขอดอกบัวผู้นั้นจงบาน ครั้นรุ่งขึ้นดอกบัวก็บานแต่ของนายเรือง

ตั้งแต่นั้นนายเรืองก็มาอยู่ที่ศาลาการเปรียญเก่าวัดอรุณราชวราราม สมาทานอุโบสถศีลฟังเทศนา เอาน้ำมันชุบสาลีเป็นเชื้อพาดแขนทั้ง ๒ ข้าง จุดไฟบูชาต่างประทีปทุกวันจนถึงวันเผาตัว นายเรืองฟังเทศนาจบแล้ว ก็นุ่งห่มผ้าชุบน้ำมัน เดินออกมาหน้าศาลาการเปรียญ นั่งพับเพียบพนมมือ รักษาอารมณ์สงัดดีแล้วก็จุดไฟเผาตัว 

เมื่อเปลวไฟวูบขึ้นท่วมตัวนั้น นายเรืองก็ร้องว่าสำเร็จปรารถนาแล้ว ชาวซึ่งดูอยู่ขณะนั้นประมาณ ๕๐๐ ถึง ๖๐๐ คนเศษ บ้างก็ร้องสาธุการ เปลื้องผ้าห่มโยนบูชาเข้าไปในกองไฟ แม้แต่แขกภายนอกพระศาสนา ก็ถอดหมวกออกคำนับโยนเข้าไปในไฟด้วย ครั้นไฟโทรมแล้ว คนที่มีศรัทธาก็ช่วยกันยกศพใส่โลงไว้ในศาลาการเปรียญ สวดพระอภิธรรม ๓ คืน
